Alzheimer’s Dementia
It is estimated that by the year
2020, twelve million Americans will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
Dementia. Ten percent of people over 65 are diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s Dementia. By age 85 that number increases to 50% and
those 85 and older are the fastest growing segment of the
population. If you or someone you love has Alzheimer’s Dementia, you
know how forgetful they can be. They require a caregiver all the
time to help them with the even the smallest daily needs. It becomes
the caregiver responsibility to seek a dentist that is specialized
and knowledgeable in treating patient with Alzheimer’s Dementia.

Alzheimer patient have difficulty; with daily dental care and
accepting help for other people. This makes them high risk for cavities
and dental health problems in Alzheimer’s patients can lead to pain,
unmanageable behavior and extensive dental treatment. Yet, the
dental needs of Alzheimer’s patients are often overlooked, usually
for very understandable reasons: the patient’s forgetfulness results
in unintentional dental neglect; medications may cause chronic “dry
mouth” or Symptoms of Xerostomia, which causes a reduction in the
healthy flow of saliva that can lead to tooth decay. They will needs
twice the number of yearly cleaning and prescription toothpaste is
required. In the event that extensive dental work is required, it is
done under I.V. sedation because the patient unpredictable behavior,
gagging disorders and it is hard for them to sit in the dental chair
for long duration which is often the byproduct of medications or
other medical conditions... We will create a calming setting in
which a sedation it is administered and monitored by a physician
specialist, a board certified Anesthesiologist and Dr. Pham take
care of the dental treatment.
